Don’t expect the same infrastructure up on the ridge as you have in Pokhara.
Cash is King: There are absolutely no ATMs on the trail or in the villages. Bring enough Nepalese Rupees (NPR) from Pokhara to cover all your meals, drinks, transport, and teahouse stays.
Mobile Network: Both Ncell and Nepal Telecom (NTC) work reasonably well at Australian Camp and Dhampus, though data speeds can be patchy. Many teahouses offer Wi-Fi, but they may charge a small fee ($1–$3), and it often slows down if the clouds roll in or if the lodge is full.
Electricity: Power outages can happen. While most teahouses allow you to charge your laptop or phone in the communal dining hall, they occasionally charge a small fee per device. Bringing a fully charged power bank is highly smart.
Because this is a short trip with heavily serviced teahouses (which provide blankets and pillows), your daypack can stay very light.
-
Footwear: Sturdy trail running shoes or lightweight hiking boots with decent grip. The stone steps can get slick, especially if there’s a morning dew.
-
Layers: Even in summer, evenings on the ridge top get breezy and cool. Pack a lightweight fleece or windbreaker jacket.
-
Sun & Bug Protection: A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are crucial as the ridge is heavily exposed to the sun. If you are hiking close to the monsoon margins (early September or late May), pack a small bottle of insect repellent or salt for occasional leeches.
