Annapurna Panorama trek – 11 days Overview

The 11-Day Annapurna Panorama Trek (often called the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek) is a classic, lower-elevation Himalayan journey perfect for beginners, families, or anyone wanting a shorter, less strenuous alternative to the high-altitude Annapurna Circuit. Spanning 11 days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu, the itinerary balances cultural immersion with breathtaking alpine scenery, beginning with a heritage tour of Kathmandu’s ancient Durbar Squares and holy shrines before transitioning to the scenic lakeside hub of Pokhara. The trekking route itself winds through lush rhododendron forests, terraced farmlands, and traditional Magar and Gurung villages like Ulleri, Landruk, and Ghandruk, where comfortable local teahouses provide warm hospitality and a firsthand taste of Nepalese mountain culture. The absolute highlight of the trip is the early morning hike to the Poon Hill viewpoint (3,210m), where you can watch a spectacular sunrise paint the massive snow-capped peaks of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges in golden light. Because the trail stays safely below the severe altitude zone, it offers an incredibly satisfying, low-risk panoramic adventure that captures the true essence of trekking in Nepal.

Day to Day Itinerary
Expand all

Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport. A representative from your trekking agency will pick you up and transfer you to your hotel in Thamel. Use the evening to rest or buy any last-minute gear.

A full day dedicated to checking your gear and obtaining necessary ACAP/TIMS trekking permits. In the meantime, you will go on a guided tour of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including the historic architecture of Bhaktapur Durbar Square and the sacred Boudhanath Stupa.

Travel to the lakeside city of Pokhara. If driving, the route follows the winding Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers, offering beautiful countryside views. Spend the evening relaxing by the shores of Phewa Lake.

A 2-hour morning drive brings you to Nayapul (the trailhead). From here, the foot journey officially begins. Walk along the sub-tropical Modi Khola riverbed, passing through the village of Birethanti to reach the small settlement of Tikhedhunga.

The day starts with the trek’s biggest physical challenge: climbing over 3,200 steep stone steps up to the Magar village of Ulleri. After conquering the stairs, the trail levels out into a gentle climb through stunning oak and blooming rhododendron forests before finishing at the mountain outpost of Ghorepani.

Wake up at 4:30 AM for the pre-dawn hike up to Poon Hill (3,210m). Watch a magical golden sunrise illuminate the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges. Head back to Ghorepani for breakfast, then continue trekking across forested ridges and deep gorges to Tadapani.

A short, heavily downhill trekking day leading through dense forests. You will arrive at Ghandruk, a large, beautifully preserved Gurung village. Spend the afternoon exploring the local stone houses, visiting the Gurung cultural museum, and enjoying front-row views of Annapurna South and Machapuchare.

Descend through terraced farmlands down to the Modi Khola riverbed, cross a suspension bridge, and make a steady ascent back up through the villages of Landruk and Tolka to arrive at the quiet, scenic ridge village of Pothana.

The final day on the trail. Take a gentle downward hike through the pristine forests of Australian Camp down to Phedi. A private vehicle will meet you here and drive you back to Pokhara. Celebrate your successful loop with a hot shower and dinner by the lakeside.

Journey back to the capital city. Once in Kathmandu, check back into your hotel and spend the afternoon doing any last-minute souvenir shopping around Thamel or exploring local markets.

Enjoy your final breakfast in Nepal. A complimentary airport transfer will be arranged by your agency to drop you off at the international terminal for your flight back home.

Important to note:

Please read the Checklist section of this trip notes for additional details of what you need to bring for the trek on this trip. You will need to bring a comfortable medium sized day pack to carry the things that you will need during the day. This should have a waist strap or (better) a padded waist belt. The weather is subject to change in high altitude so layered clothing is recommended throughout the year.

FAQs
  • The risk of severe Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is incredibly low. The trek reaches its absolute peak at 3,210 meters (Poon Hill) for just a couple of hours during sunrise, and you spend your nights sleeping much lower (usually under 2,850 meters). As long as you drink 2 to 3 liters of water daily and walk at a steady pace, your body should adapt naturally.

  • Do not buy single-use plastic water bottles on the mountain; they are terrible for the local environment and increasingly restricted. Instead, carry two reusable, lightweight bottles or a hydration bladder. You can fill them up at teahouses with boiled water (available for a small fee) or fill up from local taps and use water purification tablets or a portable filter device.

  • No. There are absolutely no ATMs once you leave Pokhara and hit the trail. You must withdraw enough cash (Nepali Rupees) in Kathmandu or Pokhara to cover all your daily trail needs—such as Wi-Fi fees, hot showers, charging, snacks, and tips for your crew.

  • Most teahouses offer Wi-Fi for a small daily fee ($2 to $5 USD), though the connection can get slow or drop entirely during bad weather or peak evening hours when everyone logs on. For cellular data, both Ncell and Nepal Telecom (NTC) work reasonably well in the lower parts of the trail, but expect signal blind spots as you walk through deep forested valleys.

  • Yes, you can charge your electronics at almost every teahouse. In lower villages, you might have standard outlets right in your room. Higher up, you will have to charge your devices at a central charging station in the communal dining room, usually for a small hourly fee ($1 to $3 USD). Bringing a high-capacity power bank is highly recommended to stay independent.
