Highlights

The Ganja La Pass Trek is classified as strenuous and difficult primarily because it transitions from a standard hike into a remote, semi-expedition alpine crossing. The route demands sustained physical endurance over 11 consecutive days of walking, culminating in a grueling 7 to 9-hour push on summit day where you must conquer an altitude of 5,122  m/16,804 ft in thin air with 50% less oxygen. Unlike popular commercial routes, the pass has no permanent trail, features highly unstable terrain prone to rockfall, and often requires fixed ropes and micro-spikes to safely navigate its steep, icy snow fields and sheer rock gullies. Furthermore, there is a total lack of alpine infrastructure, forcing you into a 3-day “point of no return” camping loop where you must sleep in sub-zero tents with no lodges, cell service, or easy evacuation options if weather turns bad or exhaustion sets in.

Ganja la pass trekking – 15 Days Trekking Overview

The Ganja La Pass Trek is one of the most thrilling, wild, and physically demanding adventure routes in the Langtang region. Because it connects the vibrant Tamang culture of the Langtang Valley with the pristine, secluded Sherpa villages of Helambu via a high, icy pass, it stands out as a true off-the-beaten-path experience.

A 15-day itinerary gives you the perfect balance of proper acclimatization, a side-trip to a stunning panoramic viewpoint, and the logistics needed for the semi-camping section over the pass.

Day to Day Itinerary
Expand all

Drive from Kathmandu to Syabru Bensi it takes about Nine hours by public bus/private vehicle. You proceed northern part of Kathmandu driving through undulating hills and slope cascade paddy to Syabru Besi passing through Dhunche. While passing along the road at the bank of Trisuli River you catch a glimpse of Ganesh Himal, terraces and green hills.

This is our first day for trekking we crosses through Bhote Koshi and follows the Langtang Khola. This trail is gradually climbs to Bamboo passing through the Landslide area. Afterwards, your trek ascends gently to Ramche (2400meters) through Bamboo (1960meters) that falls at the edge of Langtang Khola. You might have lunch at this place if like; and at the end your trail is level to the Lama Hotel.

The trek route follows Gumanechok, Ghoda Tabela the meaning of Tabela the Horse Stable. After this the trail is slightly gradual and beautiful in the valley with the grazing Yaks. Langtang village is one of famous and old villages along this trekking route and the view from here is more stunning.

Today is acclimatization day but short walk to conduct. The area is fascinating because of the famous Cheese factory. The valley lies in the bottom of Lantang.

Today is a day to rest and explore the area. You can visit the monastery and the cheese factory, walk up the moraine to see the spectacular ice faces and ascend at Chorkari Ri (5050 meters) which is highest point of this trek, directly behind the village, for a breath-taking panorama of the Langtang peak.

The place is very isolated in terms of human settlement. Since there are no lodges available for night stay we have to spend overnight at tented camp only.

Comparatively it is bit tough day on this trip because you need to cross the Ganja la pass over 5122 meters. On this pass you can find snow throughout the year.

A long day walking along the ridge, grassland, with amazing views of Mountains. The camping site would be inside the forest.

Trail descends about 200mtrs, climb the 4100meters pass. There can have chances of viewing the Annapurna Region and Mt. Everest region. You can visit one of the oldest Buddhist monastery and Sherpa villages. These villages are well settled where friendly and cheerful natured people inhabit.

Compare to other days; the day is easy through flat land with beautiful forests alongside. A stunning village half way to Shermathang. The Shermathang is another attractive Sherpa village where you can visit many ancient monasteries and also see Jugal Himal range at the north face of Shermathang village.

The trail gradually descends all the way to Melamchi Pul Bazaar through meadows and cultivated fields. There are several old villages where you can observe their culture and traditions. To walk through the area today is quite pleasant with mountain views and interacting with friendly local people.

After breakfast you travel along a bumpy rough path up to Lamidanda and then follow the black top road up to Kathmandu.

Useful Info

The Ganja La Pass Trek requires careful logistical coordination due to its remote, semi-expedition nature and strict government safety regulations. For starters, you cannot attempt this route solo; under Nepal’s trekking regulations, you must hire a licensed guide to secure the mandatory Langtang National Park Entry Permit (NPR 3,390) and the TIMS Card (NPR 2,000). Budgeting for this trek is also higher than standard routes, with full agency packages typically ranging from $1,300 to $1,650 per person to cover the cost of a guide ($25–$35/day), porters ($15–$25/day), and the heavy camping infrastructure required for the unpopulated pass section. Packing demands extreme preparation, including a four-season sleeping bag rated to -15°C, a high-lumen headlamp for the 4:00 AM summit start, and micro-spikes or crampons for navigating the icy ridge line. Finally, transportation to and from the trail involves rugged Himalayan mountain roads, where choosing a private 4×4 jeep over a public bus—though more expensive at around $300 to $400 total—is highly recommended to navigate the bumpy, unpaved 8-hour drive to Syabrubesi safely and comfortably.

FAQs
  • The final stretch is the most demanding part of the route. It is steep, narrow, and heavily littered with large boulders, loose scree, and patches of hard ice. Depending on the amount of snow cover, it transitions from a hard hike into a semi-technical scramble. It often requires your guiding team to fix roughly 50 to 60 meters of safety rope to help you navigate a precarious rock face and slick slopes right before hitting the ridge.

  • The contrast between day and night is massive. While lower valley trails offer pleasant daytime walking temperature  the high camps (Ngengang, Keldang, and Dukpu) get freezing. During the peak autumn season, expect daytime temperatures near the pass to range    and   while nighttime temperatures inside your tent routinely plummet

  • It is highly discouraged for absolute beginners. While you do not need formal mountaineering certification, you should have prior high-altitude trekking experience (such as reaching Everest Base Camp or crossing the Thorong La Pass) so you know how your body handles thin air. Because the terrain features loose rocks, narrow ridges, and snowy slopes that require excellent balance and stamina, a solid foundation of physical fitness and mountain awareness is required.

  • For the first half of the trip through the Langtang Valley and the final legs through Helambu, you will stay and eat in traditional local teahouses. For the 3 unpopulated days crossing the pass, your trekking agency must provide a full support crew. This includes porters to carry heavy canvas tents and sleeping mattresses, and a kitchen crew with stoves and fuel to cook fresh meals (usually pasta, rice, and soups). Water is collected from alpine glacial streams and must be thoroughly boiled or treated with purification tablets before drinking.
