The Gangotri Gaumukh Tapovan trek in Uttarakhand (Simply Heaven) is a dream trek not only for the spiritual seekers but also for the adventure seekers. With stunning views of the Bhagirathi Group of peaks, the majestic Shivling peak, Mt Meru, Thalay Sagar, and Bhagirathi III among others, The most well known Tapovan in India is the area above the Gangotri Glacier. Tapovan area is base camp for several mountaineering expeditions. Owering plants and the meadows are considered as one of the best. Tapovan area is full of meadows, streams and  high altitude meadow in India. Gaumukh is one of the holiest places for Hindu pilgrims who come here to witness the birth of Mother Ganga.

Outline Itinerary

1 1 Delhi – Dehradun – Rishikesh


Arrive at IGI Airport New Delhi, Take a flight from IGI Airport to Jolly Grant Airport (Dehradun Airport), Upon arrival at Dehradun Airport, Meet our representative thereafter drive to Rishikesh (30 minutes drive) Rishikesh also known as Yoga capital of the world lies in the Shivalik ranges of the Himalayas. Check in to your pre booked hotel. In the evening visit the Ganga river bank for the spectacular and moving Aarti- show of lights, sounds and chanting. Rishikesh is well known for its scenic beauty and the spiritual experience. Overnight in Rishikesh.

 

2 2 Rishikesh – Uttarkashi Drive (1158m) (170Kms/5-6hrs)

After breakfast checkout and drive towards Uttarkashi along the narrow Ganga and Bhagirathi valleys. The massive Tehri Dam lake also comes into view as you proceed towards Kandisaur & Chinyalisaur. Uttarkashi is a town located in the wide Bhagirathi valley, and has been a centre for learning and religion since the days of the Vedas! Town of Uttarkashi lies next to a hill named Varunavrat Parvat, and set on the banks of river Bhagirathi at an altitude of 1158 metres. In the evening visit Kashi Vishwanath temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. In front of the temple there is also Shakti temple which has a unique Shiva’s Great Trident made of eight major metals (Astadhatu). Overnight in Uttarkashi.

3 3 Uttarkashi – Gangotri Drive (3415m) (100Kms/4-5hrs)

After breakfast drive to reach Gangotri via Harshil. The river Bhagirathi takes you to the scenic Harshil valley. Harshil is known for apple orchards everywhere giving a retreat to your eyes. Also in the mid way before 25 Km from Gangotri visit hot spring and take sulfur bath in Gangnani. Reach Gangotri the place where the goddess Ganga descended on Earth from Heaven. In the evening 7PM take part in Ganga Aarti at Gangotri and the worship of the goddess Ganga in the temple. It is believed that Raja Bhagirath used to worship Shiva on a slab of rock known as “Bhagirath Shila” situated near the temple. Overnight at Gangotri.

 

4 4 Gangotri – Bhojbasa Trek (3800m) via Chirbasa (3600m) (13kms/5-6hrs)

Early morning have enough breakfast to keep up the energy and take steps ahead to accomplish the trek through the mountains. 2km from Gangotri is the entrance to the Gangotri National Park. Permits will be checked here. The scenery is simply breathtaking and you cannot stop to admire beauties of the forests and the valleys down below, especially Chirbasa. After walking for 8kms more we come across Chirbasa. This is a good campsite and the last point where you’ll see good vegetation. Our permits are again checked here and we halt for lunch. The route may get a little tricky as well as adventurous from here as there are a couple of rock fall zones. Bhojbasa is located 5Kms more from Chirbasa. Bhagirathi Sister peaks, Bhagirathi I, II and III ( 6856 m, 6512 m, & 6454 m respectively) stands high above the ground and are constantly visible during the trek. The word Bhojwasa came from the Birch trees, which are in abundant there. This is the widest part in the valley serving you the first view of Mount Shivling. You will find ashram, police post and rest house, also some igloo like houses. Enjoy the excellent sunset on Bhagirathi group of peaks. Dinner and overnight stay in tents at Bhojbasa.

 

5 5 Bhojbasa – Tapovan Trek(4463m) via Gomukh (4100m) (9Kms/4-5hrs)

Enjoy the panoramic view of Bhagirathi group of peaks during breakfast. Trek to Gomukh (4100m) the source of the Ganges. Gomukh is the spot where the water of Ganga trickles down from the glaciers, to descend into the Gangotri valley and beyond. The trek from Gomukh to Tapovan is a ascent crossing over the Gaumukh glacier, and as one climbs, the view of the surrounding peaks becomes clearer, Tapovan known for its beautiful meadows that encircle the base camp of the Shivling peak, visited by hundreds of tourist, mountaineers and trekkers every year. The campsite is grassy, with wild flowers as far as the eye can see, punctuated by innumerous bubbling streams, making this a very spectacular area for camping. Herds of Bharal (blue mountain goats) are a common sight from here. Arrive Tapovan Look for a suitable camping spot and camp for the night.

6 6 Explore Tapovan (4463m)

Tapovan is a high-altitude alpine meadow below Mt. Shivling, Tapovan is spread over 2 km in length. This place also serves as a perfect place for meditation, day free to acculturate, relax and enjoy the magnificent snow clapped peaks, flora & Fauna and mountain landscape. Dinner and overnight stay at the camp.

7 7 Tapovan – Chirbasa Trek (3800m) (14Km/6-7hrs)

Early morning enjoy the sunrise on legendary mountains. After breakfast trek back to Chirbasa via Gomukh glacier. After descending steeply to Gaumukh, you will again trail beside the river Bhagirathi. Then you will be back to the same pine forest, camping near the river, in between the mountains, under the pine trees. Dinner and overnight stay at the camp.

 

8 8 Chirbasa – Gangotri Trek (9Km/4-5hrs) Drive to Uttarkashi (100kms/4 hrs)

Morning breakfast and trace your steps back to Gangotri. Trek for around 4-5 hours covering 9km to Gangotri. The trek involves a gradual descent and a series of level walks, which can be done swiftly. You will enter again in the Gangotri National Park. You can catch up streams and waterfalls to refills water bottles. Bid a farewell to the Bhagirathi and other mountain peaks behind you. Reach Gangotri, Board the taxi which will take you on an 4 hrs ride to Uttarkashi through the mountains & valleys. Overnight at Uttarkashi.

9 9 Uttarkashi – Dehradun – Delhi

Morning after breakfast drive to Dehradun via Mussoorie, a beautiful hill station. Make sure to take back loads of adventure filled memories and take a pledge to come back to the mountains. On arrival transfer to Dehradun Airport to catch your flight for Delhi IGI Airport.

The Holy River Ganga is the most sacred river in the Hindu religion and its source at Gaumukh from the Gangotri glacier. The glacier measures about 30 kilometers long. The Gangotri glacier is surrounded by peaks belonging to the Gangotri Group of mountains, including some that pose a challenge to mountaineers, such as Shivling, Thalay Sagar, Meru, and Bhagirathi III. The glacier follows a N. Westerly route located below Chaukhamba Mountain, the highest peak of the group. Gaumukh is one of the holiest places for Hindu pilgrims who come here to witness the birth of Mother Ganga. The trek takes one to Gaumukh (cows mouth), the mythological source of the River Ganga. The revered shrine of Gangotri is situated at an altitude of 3415m. above sea-level surround by a narrow valley covered by a Pine and Cider forest. The visit to the shrine of Gangotri is one of the most important things to do, Visited by hundreds of thousands pilgrims every year, the 18th century Gangotri temple constructed by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa , is located near the spot where the goddess Ganga is said to have first descended on earth from heaven, as an answer to the prayers of King Bhagriath. Lord Shiva received Ganga into his matted locks to break the great force of her fall, and gently his hair thereby freeing her. From there the Ganga emerged into many streams and the one which started from Gangotri was called Bhagirathi. Tapovan is an ideal location for the tourists looking for peace and adventure. Tapovan is located on an altitude of 4463m  above sea level. Tapovan is base camp for shivling peak in Uttarakhand which is known as simply heaven. One can also have a nice view of Bhagirathi peaks from Tapovan meadow. Every year this place has been visited by thousands of tourist including foreigners for adventure activity like mountaineering & trekking. Gangotri glaciers, the original source of the sacred river Ganges, attracts tourists in large numbers every season.
